In a two-tone Nash (yes, his style as well as his skills was too flamboyant for the Klan!) Dr. Bud arrived in Newark to establish his career. His salary at the hospital was $1,800 a year; the days began at 7 A.M., often ending after 11 P.M. He learned a lot from Dr. Kenney, and then decided to open his own office. Among his first patients was a woman who had not walked for years because of a crippling arthritic condition. Four hefty men brought her to his office. She had a fear of needles and began thrashing around, nearly crushing Bud when he tried to give her an injection. To quiet her, and perhaps to protect himself, he said unthinkingly, “Be still so you’ll get well and walk.” She took him at his word and walked into the waiting room, shocking the four hefty fellows. The power of suggestion might have been at play here, but the story spread and certainly didn’t harm his beginning practice.
